This year our 8th Grade Stewardship Friday service project is providing a story time for pre-school children. This project will take place on 4 days during November. Each day we will send up to 6 students to the Community Action of Southern Indiana Head Start in Jeffersonville to read to the pre-school children. We will leave school at 2:30 p.m. and will return to school for pickup at about 3:30 p.m to 3:45 p.m.
This service project is optional, but we encourage our 8th Graders to participate.
Most of us had parents, grandparents or older brother and sisters to read to us when we were younger? For most of us that experience gave us a desire to want to read for ourselves. The children in the Head Start program have various needs and many of them may not have the support at home to develop the desire to read. Many of them need a good educational role model and encouragement to read. By giving our time, our students can be a good role model and provide a story time experience for them.
During our October Stewardship Friday, Dr. Jacque Singleton brought some of her students who are Education majors at IUS. They discussed the importance of education and literacy and
the obstacles and challenges for those lacking education. We discussed how we can help people gain literacy, including how reading to young children can plant a seed and a desire to read. The students learned some basic skills on reading to children and how they can apply those skills to the CASI Story Time Service Project.
Deadline to Sign Up is November 7th . Sign up for the 6 spots each day is first come first serve. So please sign up for at least one back up day.
